WHY NUCLEAR IN THE MARITIME?

There is growing consideration by a significant number of Maritime Experts that Nuclear Energy could potentially become a key solution in the shipping sector's efforts to decarbonize. Its application comes with significant advantages, some of which are unique. As technological progress and innovation are picking up their pace, it is actually a matter of addressing the challenges that arrive with the utilization of Nuclear Energy that will result in the successful implementation of this Source of Energy in the Maritime Industry. Indeed this will be the key field, and the successful addressing of the public perspective, technical safety & asset security or non proliferation will define the depth and the form of unleashing Nuclear Energy potentials.

Apart from established Nuclear Industry participants and their effort to provide feasible solutions to the Shipping Sector from a Technical perspective, other key players are forming and preparing a new Regulatory environment, provide suggestions or advise on potential ways to move forward. Shipping sector's Classification Societies along with the main regulatory body of IMO, are already actively engaged. Other entities such as, governmental, academic or commercial, are collaborating with Nuclear Industry, resulting in a significant increase of research in the topic. This is an ongoing debate and a continuous effort, the future of which is only now starting to shape.
